Hello Friends,
One thing all educators have in common – we worry about our students.
And we have good reasons for doing so.
My 13 year old daughter told me off-handedly recently:
“My friends talk about self-harm.”
Her 10 year old brother concurred.
I was floored.
I shouldn’t have been. The signs are there.
Are we listening or are we missing them?

This month’s Blueprints for Better Schools’ webinar featured Pam Hayes, Founder of Stand4Kind – it was an inspiring conversation on connection, care, and the small actions that make the biggest difference for student and teacher well-being.

Here are a few powerful takeaways:
Connection Isn’t a Strategy—It’s the Foundation
When teachers truly know their students, they can spot early signs of distress and create classrooms where every child feels seen and supported.
Connection is what makes learning—and healing—possible.
Wellbeing Starts With Self-Care
Pam reminded us that we can’t pour from an empty cup:
“We can’t help anybody unless we’re helping ourselves first.”
Building resilient schools begins with equipping teachers with tools to care for themselves and others.
Students Want to Be Part of the Solution
Peer-to-peer programs are powerful. When students are trained to support one another, lead with empathy, and speak up for their peers, real cultural change takes root.
It Takes a Village (so don’t be afraid to engage with parents too!)
Schools thrive when families and communities are invited to be part of the conversation.
Parents, local organizations, and mental health partners can all play a role in creating the support networks teachers and students need most.
What Teachers Can Do Right Now
Pam and Jess both emphasized one simple step: make intentional time for connection.
